I was excited to see that a major network, CBS, was airing a show, "Creature Comforts," during prime time that was for kids as I have a daughter who is 6. We do not have cable, and find there is nothing appropriate for families to watch in the evening, so if we feel like watching TV, we usually we just throw in a video.
Since "Creature Comforts" aired after dinner, I was half watching the show from the kitchen while doing the dishes. When I finally did get a chance to sit down and focus on the program, I was dismayed and embarrassed. The program is clearly aimed at kids. Why else would there be so many commercials for Nancy Drew, etc.? But then why have so much talk about sex, and not discreet talk so that it may "go over their heads," but talk that is crude, blunt, and obvious?
I'm not a prude, there are plenty of shows that deal with sex in a funny adult way that I sometimes get a chance to watch alone ("How I Met Your Mother," "Scrubs," etc.). And sometimes I will even let my daughter watch reruns of Roseanne (one of my all-time favorite shows) if I can sit with her and explain the more slippery references of the adult world.
But a kids' show with content that gets kids thinking about "adult situations" that they are just too young to think about, just sexualizes them too early. Yes I know they become curious instinctively about sex on their own around 6 years of age, but that's the province of childhood. Their curiosity should be monitored but not fueled by adults--adults should not take part or include themselves in this natural curiosity in anyway. And basically when CBS programs a show by a children's artist with plainly adult content, I feel that CBS has committed a really bad error in judgment.
I am sorry to say we will not be watching "Creature Comforts" again.
The woman who was upset about a kids show with adult content does not seem to understand that it is actually an adult show. Just because it is animated does not make it a kids show. I absolutely love it and really hope CBS will rethink it!! I was already a fan of Wallace and Gromit and have put the British versions of Creature Comforts onto our Blockbuster queue. Keep it up!
